Pershing Gym Dedication, ‘Jazz Under the Stars’ Tonight

The gym will be named for Richard Dockett.

The Pershing Elementary School gymnasium will be dedicated to Richard Dockett, an active community member who resides in the 3rd Ward of University City.

Dockett will be honored for his dedication to the students of the School District of University City and particularly Pershing Elementary School. The dedication begins at 6 p.m. at the beginning of the school’s annual “Jazz Under the Stars” Parent Teacher Organization fundraiser, which will feature the University City High School Jazz Band, student performers and local artists.

Tickets are $2. Refreshments are available for a fee.

Dockett’s children attended school in the District, according to the school district, and for more than 40 years, he fought tirelessly for education, equal justice and economic opportunities in the District and city of University City. While he served as a guardian and protector of all children, he was particularly interested in ensuring the safekeeping of students who attended Pershing Elementary School.

Dockett was recently named an “Ambassador of Pershing School” for his involvement and dedication.

“Mr. Dockett was instrumental in ensuring equality and fairness in District construction, hiring and curriculum," said School Board Secretary Rodney Jennings. "It is our honor to name Pershing’s gym “The Richard Dockett Gymnasium” in order to commemorate the positive influence he has had on our students and the community.”

Following the dedication, a formal plaque will replace the framed photo of Walter Daniels, a former Board member.

The school library was renamed “The Walter Daniels Library” in August 2012.
