U City Schools - MLK Celebration

The School District of University City will host its 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Saturday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m.

The event begins with a short parade originating at Jackson Park Elementary School and traveling west on Balson toward Hanley, then back east toward the auditorium located at 7401 Balson Ave. 

The community is invited to join marchers, including Superintendent Joylynn Wilson Pruitt, , Board of Education representatives, community members and students in commemorating Dr. King's legacy.

Community member Victor Pichon will be honored as the recipient of the Board of Education's 2011 MLK Spirit Award. 

This year’s celebration will feature the talents of the UCHS Drumline, Choir, Jazz Band, Steel Drum Band and Kinesis dance troupe, along with a variety of other student and faculty representatives. Interim school board director Rodney Jennings Sr. will share excerpts from one of Dr. King’s speeches.

Students of all ages will also share their personal writings on the day’s theme, "Someday, we will all have peace."

In case of inclement weather, MLK celebration will be rescheduled for Saturday, January 22.
