Barbara C. Jordan to Host Stamp Unveiling

Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School will host a Barbara Jordan stamp unveiling in conjunction with the United States Postal Service Gateway District on Friday, September 16 at 10 a.m. in the school gym, located at 1500 N. 82nd Blvd. in University City.

The event is free and open to the public.

The stamp is the 34th to be issued as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s Black Heritage Series. St. Louis Postmaster Larry Diegel said, “Jordan captured the attention and admiration of the nation with her intelligence and integrity, eloquent oratory, ardent defense of the Constitution, and staunch advocacy rights for all Americans.”

The portrait featured on the stamp is an oil painting by Albert Slark, based on an undated black-and-white photograph of Jordan.                       

The speaker for the unveiling will be the Honorable Judge Barbara T. Peebles, associate circuit judge for the Missouri Circuit Court. Loretta B. Tolliver, district marketing manager for the United States Postal Service will serve as master of ceremonies, with Postmaster Larry W. Diegel formally dedicating the stamp. Monica Hudson, principal of Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School, will welcome guests, and the school choir will perform the national anthem.
