Debate: Stem Cells, Tissue Ownership and DNA

University City High School students debated biotech issues Tuesday.

held its annual Biotechnology debates Tuesday in the UCHS auditorium.

The participants were the 12 finalists culled from in-class debates held March 7. The debate teams included Lily Lewis Stump and Emily Looby; Henry Braeske and Andrew White; Micah Bender and Angel Kinnel; Walter Deitzler and Robert Kneller; Sophia Kenyon and Alice Mutrux; and Ellen McGraw and Kerstin Morley.

The students debated on three topics:

  • Should embryonic stem cell research be abandoned for the less controversial research on adult stem cells?
  • Should a patient who has tissues and/or organs removed retain ownership and profit rights if the use of the tissue creates profitable medicine or treatments?
  • Should the government be allowed to collect and store DNA profiles of citizens who are not connected to a crime?
