Committee to Help Decide Fate of Delmar-Harvard School Building

The School District of University City is forming a committee to help decide the fate of current and future use of District buildings and make a recommendation to the School Board.

It's been a hot topic around town. What will become of the empty building?

At two recent U City-led forums on youth in the community, teens in attendance said they wanted to see it become a teen center.

Now, the school district which owns Delmar-Harvard, is forming a Disposition of Buildings Committee to help make recommendations to the School Board on what to do with Delmar-Harvard and other buildings in the District.

"The Committee will analyze current and future use of District buildings and make a recommendation to the (School) Board regarding future use of these buildings, including buildings recently retired due to the consolidation of schools," stated a school district press release.

The committee will look at potential sale or rental opportunities for retired buildings such as Delmar-Harvard, and evaluate the current use of all district buildings, said the school district.

The committee will include up to ten members, including representatives from district staff, parents, local government, and community members, especially those with real estate, accounting/finance, architecture, education, business, and planning expertise.

The committee will convene in September with a goal of completing its recommendations by January.

Individuals interested in being a part of this committee should submit a committee application. Applications must be received in the communications office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 22.

The District closed Delmar-Harvard following the 2010-2011 school year, as part of its redistricting plan. Delmar Harvard, which was built in 1913, was the oldest functioning school building in the University City School District. Harvard was built in 1920.
