Buddenhagen Lutzeler Named 2013 Returning Artist

She will work with students in the School District of University City the week of Feb. 4.

Each year, the University City Commission on Arts and Letterscollaborates with the School District of University City to select alumni artists for Returning Artists Week.

The 2013 Returning Artist is Saaba Buddenhagen Lutzeler, University City High School Class of 1992. Buddenhagen Lutzeler is a painter with an extensive body of stylized portraits, several permanent public art pieces and four book covers. Her works are part of permanent collections at Kenyon College and the St. Louis Urban League. Her pieces have also exhibited in numerous galleries in St. Louis and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Buddenhagen Lutzeler will visit schools in University City Feb. 4-8. The public is invited to meet her at a 7 p.m. reception Thursday, Feb. 7, in the University City High School Library, 7401 Balson Ave.

The Commission on Arts and Letters features artistically renowned University City High School graduates who return to share their talents with current students.

“The Returning Artist Program provides enrichment opportunities for both students and the returning artist,” said Adelia Parker-Castro, president of Commission. “The artist is encouraged to design programs in collaboration with our educators which augment their curriculum and further encourage our students to consider careers in the Arts.”

Since 1994, visual artists, writers, filmmakers, animators, instrumental musicians, composers, actors, singers and dancers have all “returned home” to inspire fellow Lions.
