Artists Come Home: Arts and Letters Commission Announces 2012 Returning Artists

Sallie DuMaine and Darwin Harris will present a collaborative project in February 2012.

The (UCALC) recently announced that University City High School alumni Sallie DuMaine and Darwin Harris were chosen as featured artists in the 2012 Returning Artists Program.

Their collaborative project will be seen in schools around University City next year from Feb. 6 to 10.

DuMaine graduated from University City High School in 1981. She is a writer and a musician, and last year, she was nominated for the Kevin Kline award for her music direction in Pump Boys and Dinettes at the Bear Stage.

Harris graduated in 1991 and is an actor in Los Angeles. He has appeared in commercials, television and film, and previously worked in television and stage productions out of Chicago.

The program, which has been running since 1994, features University City High School alumni who are invited to return to the school and share their creative work with current students, but the program's activities will be held in schools around the city.

Public and private middle and elementary schools will participate, in addition to the high school.

UCALC said in a press release that it sees the program as a “chance to enrich the University City schools’ arts programs and to encourage students to consider careers in the arts.”

Previous returning artists have included visual atists, glass blowers, photographers, writers, film makers, graphic designers, videographers, animators, instrumental musisions, composers, actors, singers and dancers.

According to the Returning Artists Program page on the UCALC’s website, there will also be a free exhibit or presentation that will be open to the public.
