Barbara C. Jordan to Host Stamp Unveiling of School Namesake

The Barbara Jordan stamp will be unveiled at 10 a.m. Friday in the gym at Barbara C. Jordan Elementary.

will host a special event on Friday—the unveiling of a postage stamp of the school's namesake—the late Texas Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.

Jordan, a Democrat, was the first black woman elected in the Texas state senate. Later, from 1973 to 1979, she represented Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The unveiling at the school, located at 1500 N. 82 St., is slated for 10 a.m. Fridayin the school gym. The event is free and open to the public.

The Barbara Jordan stamp is the 34th to be issued as part of the Postal Service’s Black Heritage Series.

The portrait featured on the stamp is based on an undated black-and-white photograph of Jordan.

The speaker for the unveiling will be the Judge Barbara T. Peebles, associate circuit judge for the Missouri Circuit Court.

Loretta B. Tolliver, district marketing manager for the U.S. Postal Service will serve as master of ceremonies, with Postmaster Larry W. Diegel formally dedicating the stamp. The school choir will perform the national anthem.
