City of University City Honored With Water Stewardship Award

Missouri American Water presented its second annual Water Stewardship awards to six Missouri cities, including University City.

University City has earned recognition for its environmental approach to its water resources.

Missouri American Water presented its second annual Water Stewardship awards to six Missouri cities, including U City. University City Mayor Shelley Welsch accepted the award.

Clayton, Town and Country, Kirkwood and Creve Coeur were also winners. The winning cities all had to be members of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).

"Becoming an ICLEI member starts with an evaluation of virtually every process and practice in the day-to-day work of delivering vital local government services," said a press release from Missouri American Water. "Members work to advance deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and achieve tangible improvements in local sustainability." 

The Water Stewardship awards were presented by Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Sarah Parker Pauley and Missouri American Water President Frank Kartmann.

"The St. Louis area is defined by our rivers -- the Mississippi, the Missouri and the Meramec," said Missouri American Water President Frank Kartmann. "We believe that every environmental improvement that we make -- as cities, businesses and nonprofits -- represents a promise that we're making to protect the future of our water resources."
