U City to Hold Earth Day Youth Art Contest

invites all residents in kindergarten through 12th grade to take part in a city-wide art competition to celebrate Earth Day.

Winners will receive a gift bag of goodies and will have their work showcased at University City’s Earth Day exhibit. In addition, winning work will appear on the University City web site and may be featured in promotional and marketing materials. Everyone who takes part will receive a certificate of appreciation from the City.

Students are asked to create artwork that reflects the ideas of sustainability in their community. Participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible with their submissions, which may include a painting, drawing, photograph, graphic design, collage, sculpture, video, song or poem promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The guidelines for the contest are as follows:

• The artwork must focus on one or more areas: air; animals/wildlife; biodiversity; climate change/weather; conservation; energy; environmental health; nature awareness; pollution; recycling/waste management; sustainability; trees/forests; or water.
• All two-dimensional visual entries must be no larger than 11x14 inches and may be matted. Sculptures must be no larger than 2 x 2 x 2 feet. The maximum length for songs is three minutes and for videos is five minutes.
• Participants may use recyclable materials from the to create their artwork. (Contact the Public Works Department at 314-505-8560 for assistance.)
• All entries must include a completed, signed entry form. Forms can be downloaded here.
• Artwork may be dropped off in person or sent via mail to City Hall, 6810 Delmar Blvd. 3rd floor, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• All entries must be received or postmarked by March 15.

A panel of judges from University City will review the submitted artwork and select one winner in each category from each of three grade-level divisions: Grades K-3; Grades 4-8; and Grades 9-12. 

All artwork will be on display at a University City municipal building (City Hall or ) beginning the day they are received through Earth Day, April 22, so the sooner an entry is turned in, the longer it will be on display and the more people will be able to enjoy it.
