U City By the Numbers: 2013 State of the City

Mayor Shelley Welsch and City Manager Lehman Walker gave an update on the city Tuesday.

Mayor Shelley Welsch told citizens Tuesday that University City is a "great community that has the potential to be greater still."

Welsch and City Manager Lehman Walker spoke at the Historical Society of University City's 'State of the City' at University City City Hall.  

Welsch updated residents on things going on in the city since her last State of the City, including the new developments going on. She noted Washington University's $80 million investment in the Delmar Loop, the plans for a new Walgreens and Delmar and Delcrest and the new MySci Resource Center.

"Sixty-seven new businesses have opened since last year," she said. 

Welsch added that plans for the Loop Media Hub, Loop Trolley and Parkview Gardens Sustainability Plan were moving through city commissions.

Walker focused on the fiscal stability of the city, with the need for balanced budgeting and smart use of the city's reserve fund. Walker recently presented the city council with a draft of the 2014 budget.

  • 16,000 — occupied housing units in the city
  • 3,000 — occupancy permits issued in 2012
  • 800 — number of businesses in University City
  • 150 — number of citizens serving on city boards and commissions
