Stephen Colbert Asks Russ Carnahan: Are You A Genetically Modified Vegetable From Monsanto?

Candidate for the First Congressional district seat sits in the 'Colbert Report' hot seat.

Late night funny man Stephen Colbert has made a habit out of putting members of Congress in uncomfortable spots over the years in a regular segment on his satirical program, The Colbert Report.

Thursday night, that segment featured , who is locked in a redistricted primary with U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay in the 1st Congressional district.

But Colbert began the Q & A focusing on , the Creve Coeur agri-giant. Colbert asked if the company's headquarters were in his district (the new 1st), and Rep. Carnahan said it was.

Under the new boundaries, the company's headquarters appear to be physically located in the new 2nd Congressional district, with Warson Road being the dividing line, literally across the street.

Colbert jokingly asked Carnahan how he felt about Genetically Modified Foods, or GMOs, including if the Congressman was a "vegetable from the labs of Monsanto."

Shortly after the segment aired, Rep. Clay's campaign Twitter account chided his opponent over the appearance in what are now the final days after a tense campaign. 

"What a GREAT match: one pretends to be a Newscaster the other pretends 2 represent St. Louis," Clay's campaign tweeted.
