Resident Suing City Over Lights at Ruth Park Driving Range

The driving range was built in 2008.

A University City man is suing the city over the lights at Ruth Park Golf Course Driving Range and the damage he says they are doing to his property value.

Dr. Ethan Schuman is a resident of Groby Road. His suit claims the driving range and its lights which allow the range to stay open past dark have done damage of over $25,000 to his property value.

Quoting from the suit:

"The driving range project, built for public use, has caused damage to and constitutes a taking of Dr. Schuman's property in the following ways:

    • Light from the driving range floods Dr. Schuman's property;
    • Noise from the driving range floods Dr. Schuman's property;
    • Members of the public using the driving range park along Groby Road, causing congestion, traffic issues, and contributing to traffic accidents;
    • The light, noise and traffic associated with the driving range is unreasonable and has resulted in a wrongful appropriation of Dr. Schuman's property;
    • The light, noise and traffic resulting from the City's public driving range improvements unreasonably interfere with Dr. Schuman's peaceful use and enjoyment of his property;
    • The light, noise and traffic have damaged the market value of Dr. Schuman's property.
    City Manager Lehman Walker said the city has received the suit and it has been referred to the city's attorney.
    Patch calls to Dr. Schuman's attorney for comment were not returned.
