Mock Roundabout Is Coming to Delmar, Trinity

The new trial traffic design will help the city determine if a roundabout would help traffic flow in the historic plaza area.

The City of University City has begun work to create a mock roundabout at the intersection of Delmar Blvd. and Trinity Ave.

According to the city, the purpose of the temporary roundabout is to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposed permanent roundabout at this intersection. The new alignment would serve the following  purposes:

  • Improve traffic operations for northbound and southbound left turning vehicles from Trinity Avenue
  • Improve safety for pedestrians and bicycles by calming traffic as it enters the Delmar Loop to limit speed to 15 mph at the roundabout, and
  • To decrease confusion caused by the existing eight leg intersection.
The temporary design will consist of the installation of about 1,400 feet of asphalt curbing along the edges of Trinity and Delmar and the edges of splitter islands.

Concrete planters and reflective safety barrels will be placed in the inner circle of the roundabout. New pavement markings and signs also will be added to guide pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Some parking restrictions will also be added.

Surveyors will layout the roundabout the week of June 24. During the process, two octogonal islands along with the two five-globe streetlights need to be removed to allow traffic flow on the roundabout.

Traffic control will be provided during the installation of the asphalt curb and pavement markings and signs. This installation is scheduled for July 8-9, weather permitting.

The mock roundabout will be up for at least 30 days while the city evaluates traffic and pedestrian safety. The results will be given to city officials so that a determination may be made on the construction of a permanent roundabout.

Tips for Roundabout Safety

  1. As you approach the roundabout, you will see a sign "roundabout ahead" sign with an advisory speed limit for the roundabout.
  2. Slow down as you approach the roundabout, and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  3. Continue toward the roundabout and look to your left as you near the yield sign and dashed yield line at the entrance to the roundabout. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
  4. Once you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle and proceed to your exit. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding.
  5. Look for pedestrians and use your turn signal before you exit, and make sure to stay in your lane as you navigate the roundabout.
  6. Pedestrians shall use the marked crosswalks at the four (4) legs of the intersection to cross Delmar Boulevard and Trinity Avenue.
