Gov. Nixon Comes to U City to Veto Adoption Bill

The bill would make it illegal to enforce foreign laws or legal decisions deemed "repugnant or inconsistent" with Missouri or U.S. law.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon came to University City Monday to veto a bill that some say would endanger foreign adoptions.

Nixon vetoed the bill at Lutheran Family and Children's Services near Delmar and I-170.

The bill would make it illegal for Missouri to enforce any foreign law or legal decision deemed “repugnant or inconsistent” with Missouri or U.S. law, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Quoting from the Post, Nixon said:

“The laws passed in Jefferson City have real consequences. This bill could jeopardize a family’s ability to adopt children from other countries.”
