Construction of Mock Roundabout Starts This Week

The new trial traffic design will help the city determine if a roundabout would help traffic flow in the historic plaza area.

Construction work on the mock roundabout at Delmar and Trinity is expected to begin on Tuesday, July 16,  and take three days.

For worker’s and driver’s safety, Delmar Blvd and Trinity Ave intersection is proposed to be closed off and detours will be set up through Midland-Vernon-Kingsland Avenues for both east and west bound Delmar traffic, and is subject to St. Louis County’s approval.

The temporary design will consist of the installation of about 1,400 feet of asphalt curbing along the edges of Trinity and Delmar and the edges of splitter islands.

Concrete planters and reflective safety barrels will be placed in the inner circle of the roundabout. New pavement markings and signs also will be added to guide pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The mock roundabout will be up for at least 30 days while the city evaluates traffic and pedestrian safety. The results will be given to city officials so that a determination may be made on the construction of a permanent roundabout.

  • As you approach the roundabout, you will see a sign "roundabout ahead" sign with an advisory speed limit for the roundabout.
  • Slow down as you approach the roundabout, and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  • Continue toward the roundabout and look to your left as you near the yield sign and dashed yield line at the entrance to the roundabout. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
  • Once you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle and proceed to your exit. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding.
  • Look for pedestrians and use your turn signal before you exit, and make sure to stay in your lane as you navigate the roundabout.
  • Pedestrians shall use the marked crosswalks at the four (4) legs of the intersection to cross Delmar Boulevard and Trinity Avenue.
