Centennial Commons Gym to Get a Makeover

The ceiling is getting a new coat of paint and hopefully an end to the flaking pieces of paint that fall on the gym and track floor.

As the University City Parks and Recreation Department shared earlier this week, the gymnasium and walking track at Centennial Commons are closed until January 2013.

The gym is closed because it is going to get a fresh coat of paint. The University City City Council approved the measure Monday night.

The bid was awarded to Jos. Ward Painting Co. for $65,802.

According to the city manager's report, the paint on the ceiling of the recreational facility has been flaking since it was built in 2006 because of improper surface preparation or because incorrect paint was used.

Quoting the report:

In the past, several attempts were made to fix the flaking paint. None of the repairs were sufficient to stop the problem. In the Spring of 2012, staff consulted painting experts who recommended taht the entire structural steet roof and ceiling would need teh existing surface coating removed and thoroghly cleaned by sandblasting. Then, proper paint would be applied to ensure adhesion. This solution is long-term.

The gymnasium and track are closed but the rest of Centennial Commons is still open for use.
