Witnesses Spotted Burglar Running From U City Home, Police Say

Officers stopped Leon D. Thomas as he drove out of a scrapyard after selling a stolen copper downspout, police said.

Witnesses identified a man running from an attached garage at a University City home at about 2:52 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Leon D. Thomas, 33, of the 1200 block of Hamilton Avenue in St. Louis, was charged with second-degree burglary and misdemeanor stealing.

University City Police said two people saw Thomas running from an attached garage at a home in the 7400 block of Delmar Boulevard.

A toolbox was stolen from the garage and a copper downspout had been stolen from the home’s exterior, police said.

Thomas was stopped and arrested when police found him driving out of a scrap yard where he had just sold the copper downspout, according to a court document.

Thomas also has been charged for a Jan. 24 burglary in unincorporated St. Louis County. He is being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center. Bail was set at $10,000 for the University City burglary.
