U City Man Kicks in Door Fleeing Cops After Fight at Graduation Ceremony, Police Say

A University City man fleeing from police kicked in a door to a house in the 7600 block of Carleton and barricaded himself inside the home.

Demond Steward, 18, of the 8000 block of Braddock Avenue in U City, was charged May 30 with resisting arrest, first-degree trespassing and unlawful use of a weapon.

University Police said Chaifetz Arena Security notified the department they intervened in an altercation May 29 involving Steward at the University City High School graduation ceremony.

A University City police officer said he spotted a car described by Chaifetz Security and began following the car. The vehicle stopped suddenly and Steward fled on foot, police said.

Police said Steward kicked in a door to a home in the 7600 block of Carleton Avenue and barricaded himself in the home. Officers said they saw him drop a a P89 Ruger 9 mm handgun before entering the home.

Steward was being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center. Bond was reduced from $50,000 down to $10,000 Wednesday.
