U City Man Charged With Receiving Stepfather's Stolen Tools

University City Police said Byron E. Douthit fled from officers and hid in another house on Julian Avenue while attempting to elude them.

A 20-year-old University City man faces criminal charges for having his step-father’s stolen construction tools, fleeing from police and hiding in a nearby home.

Byron Edward Douthit, 20, of the 7000 block of Julian Avenue in University City, was charged Sunday with receiving stolen property, first-degree burglary and resisting arrest.

University City Police said officers were called to the home in the 7000 block of Julian to investigate construction tools stolen from a shed. Douthit was seen running into the house, where he locked himself in his room.

Police said the missing tools were found in Douthit’s bedroom, and Douthit fled on foot. He entered another home in the 7000 block of Julian to hide from police. Officers said he did not have permission to enter. The resident was home at the time.

Police said Douthit admitted to receiving the tools from another person and knew they belonged to his stepfather.

Douthit is being held in St. Louis County jail. Bail was set at $50,000.
