University City Peace Weekend

On Saturday April 23rd 2011 University City Youth will be sponsoring a fundraiser weekend for peace as they band together to raise funds to send four UCHS students that have earned certified conflict resolution training at the ML King Center for Non-Violent Social Change to South Africa.

The Young Ambassadors for Non-Violence will further their training as they study, “The Struggle from Apartheid to Democracy” and the role nonviolence played, but to also “cut their teeth” as they will speak with South African high school students about issues related to violence in Africa and North America. 

The University City Youth Society, UCHS TRENDS, The Ladies of Elegance and Gentleman’s Quarterly will team up for a Community Wide Car Wash Fundraiser and City Wide Peace Party. The groups also are asking all Youth, not only youth from University City to join them in this Service Project at several businesses locations in University City where the youth will wash cars and trucks for $10.00 with a majority of the proceeds to benefit the Ambassadors. The youth wanted to help pay for the trip to South Africa that is estimated to cost $18,000.00.

The day will culminate with a City Wide Peace Party at the Broadway Nightclub of North County at 11836 West Florissant at Halls Ferry Road. The party will be primarily for local youth but also the parents and people that want to support the Young Ambassadors for Non Violence. The peace party is from 7pm to 11pm and a majority of the ten dollars admission also will be used to fund the South African trip. All youth that volunteered for the fundraising will be admitted free into the peace party. There will be food, youth speakers, spoken word, local rappers and performances for the youth and absolutely NO ALCOHOL will be served during the peace party.

The UC Peace Weekend is a fundraising and awareness raising event driven by youth to promote peace, and give youth exposure to organizations that brainstorm, develop, and create projects to help better the community they live in. These projects include fundraisers, recreational events, rallies, workshops, and various other activities. The goal of these projects is to encourage youth to focus their energy toward positive things which they can use to better themselves and their peers.

The UC Peace Weekend is the brainstorm of Monet Grant, Lynden Peoples, TaQuoara Hardiewa, and Radazaih Whittington of University City High School, Jamie Cox and Roneisha Simpson of Cardinal Ritter Prep High School, Ernest Carter, Interim Assistant Principal at UCHS, and Rod Jennings, School Board Member in University City.

School Board member Rod Jennings asks that the entire community make an effort to support the youth.

 We need every car on that weekend lined up at these car washes to support the youth. We need all the youth in University City that are tired of always hearing in the media about the bad choices that a small group of their peers have made to show up and show the community what they are truly made of. We need adults to not only bring their cars, but we need volunteers as adult supervisors. We need donations of not only money but food, drinks, soap, rags, hoses, and we need people to serve as security at the peace party.

We have to promote peace from the Eastgate Avenue Basketball Courts, to the Ruth Park Golf Course, from the Delmar Loop to Olive Blvd International Village, we need to come out and take our community back and support these young people that are saying it in no uncertain terms. Peace is our only weapon against violence, apathy, and anger, not only among the youth but among every man, woman, and child in University City and the surrounding region.
