Statement from Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal on the Passing of Nelson Mandela
Jefferson City — Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City, issues the following statement regarding the recent announcement of Nelson Mandela’s death. Mandela emerged from prison after 27 years to lead the nation of South Africa out of decades of apartheid.
“The balance between fearlessness and sacrifice is best described in the life and actions of Nelson Mandela. His legacy is a model for every person to follow and he will remain a jewel in our hearts forever. Mandela fought for the right causes without considering what personal losses he may have had to endure. The most important lesson Mandela left for his believers is that being a casual spectator is simply not enough. We must always fight for justice and equality because it will lift every person and community to a higher standard of dignity. Nelson Mandela is an example to the entire world for generations to come. We must teach our children what the legacy of a selfless person look like. We must not stand in the shadows of glory, but we must work to fulfill the vision Nelson Mandela laid out for us with our own actions.
A champion for equality will always be known for their good deeds.
We must remain thankful and diligent in the pursuit of Peace.”
