Are We Moving Forward, Educationally?

Educational results in country, state, and community don't bode well for our future. Can we stop decline before it's too late?

Missouri is now ranked 41 out of 50 states educationally, with a C grade as opposed to a C- last year. The USA is ranked 26th, educationally, out of the top industrialized, world, nations. This world ranking is a cause for real concern, so how does that make Missouri at 41st in the USA rank?

Let's take this a long step forward, here in University City School District we barely attained accreditation last year. So our standing in Mo., out of over 300 districts, must be hovering around 290 something. I am not a mathematician, but even I can figure, ("Houston we have a problem"), let me say I and many of my cohorts have and continue to try and solve this problem! We have aggressively worked at this within and outside of the system, and ponder it more today than when we started over 40 years ago.

Our country, nor our microcosm, U City cannot continue at this pace without dire consequences. The teachers, administrators, boards of education, and all working in the field of education are well meaning but we are still failing. We must come to grips with this problem as though engaged in a battle which we are losing. Even with the success of our best and brightest, as we all can see, we aren't being successful. Even with all of our genius exhibited in our creative endeavors we aren't directing enough toward educating all of our children.
