Candy Corn: Eight Facts, Two YouTube Videos

What's the best thing about Halloween? Is it dressing up in funny costumes? No way, it's got to be that it's candy corn season!

Halloween food has stiff competion with Thanksgiving a month away but no doubt the October holiday has a lock on candy corn.

Perhaps candy corn is at the kernel of what makes Halloween so popular.

It's been around for over a hundred years. Let's look at a few items of interest about that tri-color sweetness.

  1. Many sources, like Haunted Bay.com, will tell you that candy corn was invented in the 1880s, and the Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia was the first to produce it commercially.
  2. The blog, ifood.TV, has gone to the effort to psychoanalyze Halloween candy eaters. Apparently, "candy corn lovers are a deluded lot." Also "Good and Plenty fans are optimistic," and "Reese’s Peanut Buttercups lovers are a generous lot."
  3. Food for thought: if you slice a piece of candy corn into its three separate colors, and eat each segment separately, do they taste different? Chow.com tackled that one!
  4. None other than National Public Radio tells us that more than 35 million pounds of candy corn is made every year. That's about nine billion kernels.
  5. From Huffpost Food, a serving of candy corn has about 22 pieces and contains 140 calories, no fat.
  6. Holidayinsights.com tells us that October 30 is National Candy Corn Day! That seems right.
  7. Luvzbluez.com state that, about 5 1/2 billion pieces of candy corn is sold at Halloween. That's enough to circle the moon twice with plenty left over. And each piece only has 3.57 calories.
  8. Luvzblues also reports the news that according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, candy is no different than a slice of bread, bowl of cereal or a cracker when it comes to causing tooth decay
