Understanding Cities: Lecture by David van der Leer

Cities are intricate machines that demand examination through

a panoramic lens. “Understanding Cities” will draw on David van der Leer’s

extensive experience in the fields of urban design, art, and architecture.

Through the BMW Guggenheim Lab—a project for New York’s Guggenheim Museum—he
developed and headed the curatorial team of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, a mobile
laboratory that traveled to major cities worldwide, led by international,
interdisciplinary teams of architects, artists, urban designers, scientists,
educators, and experts on the subject of sustainability. In his new role as
director of Van Alen Institute, Van der Leer is summoning the organization’s
dynamic 120 year New York presence to help expose and inform the issues facing
the future of our cities.
