Water Main Break in U City Causes Discolored Water

Clayton residents report discolored water coming out of faucets and toilets Monday morning.

Some residents in neighboring Clayton woke up to discolored water Monday morning.

Ann Detmer, a Missouri American Water representative said crews are flushing pipes, and that the discolored water is "perfectly safe" to drink.

She said the discoloration comes because water lines had to be flushed following a water main break Sunday in University City. The flushing is conducted as part of the repair process.

"The water has been tested, everything is fine," said Detmer, external affairs manager for the St. Louis and St. Charles areas. The discoloration is caused by things such as calcium deposits, she said.

She said some Clayton residents could see discoloration for the better part of the day. Repairs are expected to be finished Monday.

A Clayton resident reported discolored water coming Monday from faucets and toilets in homes on North Meramec Avenue.

Cheryl Verde, who lives in the 300 block, said she and her husband had brewed a pot of coffee and had begun to drink it when they noticed the issue. They contacted Missouri American Water and the City of Clayton about the issue.

The water ranges in color from yellow to brown, she said.
