St. Louis Zoo Names New Elephant: Meet Priya

The public has spoken. A naming contest selected the name Priya for the newest member of the Zoo's Asian elephant herd.

Raja's newest daughter, born April 26 at the St. Louis Zoo, finally has a name. Priya was named after a weeklong contest to pick among five names. The other options included Willow, Violet, Cai and Harper.

According to the Zoo, there were 53,692 votes cast last week. Priya won out with 29.4 percent (15,777 votes) of the vote.

The runners-up came in as follows:

  • Willow received 13,311 votes (24.8 percent); 
  • Violet received 12,508 votes (23.3 percent); 
  • Cai received 7,006 votes (13.0 percent); and 
  • Harper received 5,084 votes (9.5 percent).

Ellie, one of the Zoo's Asian elephants, gave birth to a bouncing 250-pound baby girl at 10:57 p.m. Friday, April 26, according to the Zoo.
