More Than 1,500 Run for Fun

University City celebrates its 37th annual Memorial Day Run, with proceeds benefiting the public library, U City In Bloom, the Green Center, and the University City Children's Center.

Monday marked the 37th annual U City Memorial Day Run, and things are a little bit different than they were in 1974 when the run started.

The event was originally organized by the Special Events Committee, who planned the run for 10 years before it was taken over by the public library in 1984, said Linda Ballard, the former University City library director.

"People are still registering right now, and it looks like we'll have over 1,500 runners today," Ballard said.

In the past few years, running times have been tracked electronically using a chip located on the runner's number. "We work hard every year to try and make the run better and better," said Ballard.

In addition to the 5K and 10K, the run also featured an 8-12 year old fun run and an 8-and-under fun run, in which everyone got ribbons.
