Missouri American Water to Replace Aging Water Line

Crews to begin work in University City after the first of the year.

Missouri American Water crews will replace about 900 feet of a 6-inch diameter water main along Amherst Avenue from Swarthmore Lane to Gay Avenue.

The replacement work will begin in approximately two weeks and is slated for completion in February 2013.

The project will replace a water line that is approximately 71 years old with a new section of 8-inch diameter pipe. The work is part of Missouri American Water’s proactive water main replacement program, designed to identify and replace water lines that are at the end of their useful lives.

Replacement projects are selected based upon their community benefits, including reducing water main breaks and improving the overall integrity of the water system in the area.  Missouri American Water maintains approximately 4,200 miles of water mains in the St. Louis area.

Drivers may notice some closures of the westbound lane of Amherst Avenue during the projected one-month construction. When possible, lane closures will be timed to minimize disruption of rush hour traffic. Missouri American Water has notified residents about maintaining water service to their homes and businesses during the construction process.
