Start the School Day with Breakfast

As kids head back to school, one of the most important things they need to start the year on the right foot is breakfast. Studies show that breakfast eaters perform better on standardized tests, miss fewer days of school, have increased classroom attention, better hand eye coordination and they have better verbal fluency. In addition to these benefits, starting the day with breakfast generally provides a big leap forward in meeting nutritional needs and breakfast eaters often have a healthier body weight.

While breakfast is known to provide all of these benefits many kids miss this important meal either because they don’t take the time to eat or, in some cases, there isn’t anything for them to eat.  If your kids are looking for something quick before they head out the door consider these options.

  • Cereal, fruit and milk in a portable mug
  • String cheese and a piece of fruit
  • A wheat tortilla wrapped around string cheese and applesauce
  • Yogurt mixed with granola and fruit in a portable mug
  • Scrambled eggs and cheese in a pita pocket
  • A hard cooked egg and a piece of fruit

If carrying breakfast isn’t possible, or your kids won’t eat that early in the morning, investigate school breakfast. School breakfast is a healthful option that often is economical and certainly is convenient. Whether you choose breakfast at home, breakfast on the run or breakfast at school make sure you teach your children the value of starting their day with the nutrition they need to be their best. Oh and if you don't get breakfast - start there to provide them a good role model!
