Cha-Ching!  Candy in the bag, smiles all around and a sprint to the next house. Her delivery is perfect. My daughter is learning the benefits of a well-delivered joke at a tender age.

This year is much better than last, when she was left to her own devices by her parents and she got quizzical glances instead of groans as she created her "jokes" on the fly - a mixture of bad poetry and half-remembered riddles. We found her joke on-line this year and made her memorize it on the car ride to grandma's.

Coming from Peoria as I do, the tradition of joke-telling at Halloween is entirely foreign to me. Our tradition simply consisted of yelling "trick or treat!" then waiting while a neighbor dropped the hated peanut butter kisses into our bags, then off to the next house. It was a much less social experience than telling a joke, and in a way, a scarier one.  Perhaps it is better for our children to be more concerned with stage fright than some of the more morbid fears on Halloween night.
