Director of Horticultural

U City in Bloom (UCB) is a 30 year old non profit organization that is seeking a Director of Horticultural.  This person is responsible for designing, ordering, and implementing the horticultural plan for 200+ public gardens throughout the City of University City and University City School District.  This person is the face of UCB in the community and will need excellent public relations skills.  The person is responsible for supervising paid independent contractors/landscapers and volunteers.  A minimum 4 years experience in the horticultural field is required.  This is a full time position with a salary range of $35,000 - $40,000 with some benefits.

Job Description:

  • Designs & plans 236 public gardens in U City with input from staff & volunteers, considering sustainable plantings and available volunteer watering.
  • Coordinates purchasing of plant materials, soil additives, irrigation supplies as needed on a timely basis.
  • Schedules deliveries of all materials needed for the gardens.
  • Maintains thorough records all plants, soil additives and supplies purchased for each garden
  • Schedules, supervises, and works with independent contractors & volunteers for:
  • Soil preparation
  • Planting
  • Watering – care of irrigation systems
  • Maintenance, include fall & winter clean-up
  • Mulching – winter primarily
  • Coordinates garden plans, planting, and maintenance with the City of University Parks & Public Works Department.
  • Coordinates garden plans, planting, and maintenance with University City School District.
  • Reports to U City in Bloom Board of Directors; Presents monthly report and attends monthly Board meetings & all committee meetings
  • Actively involved with:
    • Fund raising activities – Plant Sale, Bulb Sale, Garden Tour and other special events
    • Selecting, developing, supervising and evaluating all personnel (independent contractor and volunteers)
    • Maintaining financial records of all purchases and following the financial procedures of U City in Bloom.

    ·      Performs other duties at the direction of the Board of Directors.

    Requirements:

    ·        Horticultural education & knowledge of national horticultural information sources

    ·        Garden design experience.

    ·        Ability to work with and motivate a diverse group of people.

    ·        Ability of recruit and motivate volunteers and coordinating their performance.

    ·        Ability to promote sustainable landscape and garden methods and techniques, such as:

    o       Limit the use of pesticides, use IPM methods.

    o       Use organic fertilizers and natural mulch.

    o       Use native plants, nativares and locally adaptable trees, shrubs and flowers/

    ·        Computer proficiency in Microsoft products, especially Excel and Word.

    ·        Truck and tools preferred and will reimburse for gas.
