Restaurant Inspections: Chong Wah, Jilly's Cupcake Bar, Ranoush, St. Louis Bubble Tea, Starbucks

See how your favorite U City restaurants performed on recent St. Louis County Health Department inspections.

Restaurant inspections in University City are conducted by the St. Louis County Department of Health. Patch has a summary of the public reports affecting area eating and drinking establishments reviewed March 1-April 9.

Chong Wah Restaurant, 8208 Olive Blvd.
Inspection date: April 1
Grade: A (90)
Comments: The restaurant’s back door was found open, allowing for possible pest entry. Hepatitis A records were not provided for all employees. In the kitchen, the inspector observed:

  • Raw eggs were being stored over cooked chicken. Items were recommended for proper refrigerator storage.
  • Gravy on the steam table was not holding the proper temperature. The gravy was reheated and placed on a steam table, according to the report.
  • Some food items in the walk-in cooler did not have a ‘date made’ or discard date listed.
  • Scoops and utensils were found inside food containers when not in use.
  • Scratched and worn cutting boards were recommended for resurfacing or replacement.
  • Dust build-up around pipes, walls and vents.

Jilly’s Cupcake Bar, 8509 Delmar Blvd.
Inspection date: March 28 (follow-up)
Grade: A (100)
Comments: Violations from a March 20 visit (including missing signage at a hand sink, improperly stored wiping cloths, scratched cutting boards and a leak in the kitchen) were corrected. The inspector also tested the dish machine, which wasn’t properly dispensing chlorine during the March 20 visit.

Ranoush, 6501 Delmar Blvd.
Inspection date: April 3
Grade: A (96)
Comments: Hepatitis A immunization records for employees were not available. The inspector also noted empty paper towel dispensers in the kitchen and men’s bathroom, in addition to a soiled can opener.

St. Louis Bubble Tea, 6677 Delmar Blvd.
Inspection date: April 2
Grade: A (92)
Comments: Rice and eggs found sitting out at room temperature were refrigerated, according to the report. Hepatitis A records were not available for all employees. The inspector noted one of the sinks did not have a hand soap dispenser, some debris accumulation on floors, wet wiping cloths weren’t stored in sanitizing solution, and some food products were being stored on the floor.

Starbucks, 6621 Delmar Blvd.
Inspection date: April 2
Grade: A (100)
