Report: Possible Global Foods in the Delmar Loop

Washington University in St. Louis broke ground in early February on the school’s $80 million student apartment and retail project in the Delmar Loop in University City and the city of St. Louis.

The 4.4-acre residential and retail development project includes 22,000 square feet of new retail space. No retailers were announced for the space when ground was broken, however, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is now reporting that Pace Properties is talking to Global Foods to add a grocery store.

In an email to the Post-Dispatch, Washington University spokeperson Susan McGinn Killenberg cautioned that talks are in a preliminary stage and no contracts have been signed.

Quoting from the Post story:

“Pace ... is actively negotiating with several potential tenants,” said Killenberg, in an emailed statement, “including the owners of Global Foods.”

No leases have been signed for the retail space, McGinn Killenberg said, and “neither Pace nor Washington University will speculate on future tenants or make further comments until leases have been signed.”

In all, the development will include five new buildings, with apartments for about 600 undergraduate students and 22,000 square feet of new retail space. The mixed-use development, to be built on existing university-owned property, will be between Delmar and Enright to the north and flanked by Westgate and Eastgate avenues.

Demolition on the project began at the end of February and excavation work began in March.

Construction of the buildings in Phase 1 of the project is expected to begin in the spring. Phase 1 plans call for students and businesses to move in by August 2014.
