Pratzel's Is Gone, But Their Cupcakes Live On

The Olivette bakery with a deep history in Creve Coeur and University City closed several weeks ago.

Pratzel's Eastgate Bakery may have closed its doors but its baked goods live on.

The St. Louis institution for almost a century closed its doors sometime in late summer. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Off the Menu blog reported that Kohn's Kosher Deli on Olive bought the recipes for some of the Pratzel's time-honored sweets, including its upside down cupcakes.

Pratzel's had reopened in summer of 2011 at its former manufacturing plant at the Dielman Industrial Park in Olivette after the original owners closed up shop in January.

Filmaker Jon Mills, who bought rights to the Pratzel brand and recipes from the Pratzel family, told Patch last summer that he had faced some bureaucratic hurdles in reopening the business, and that road construction in the area, now complete, was also a challenge at the time.

Patch attempted to reach owner Mills by phone after learning of the closing, and there was no answer at the business door in Olivette.

The business had been serving wholesale customers and next-day orders, with limited retail business at the Olivette site.

Ronnie Pratzel, the former owner, had been a consultant for the business. He told Patch Wednesday that his contractual agreement with Mills expired in June and that he had not been involved with the bakery in roughly a year.
