'Occupy' Protests Hit Monsanto's Creve Coeur Headquarters

Non-violent actions call out Monsanto's opposition to California ballot measure pushing food labeling.

Planned worldwide protests of Monsanto came to the company's Creve Coeur headquarters Monday, as approximately 50 people demonstrated in front of the company's Olive Boulevard entrance near Warson Road.

Unlike other protests worldwide which sought to disrupt company business and resulted in arrests, the gathering here Monday was calm by comparison.

Creve Coeur Police officers were present, and protesters were notified that cars parked at Stacy Park in Olivette would be towed.

Those in attendance were supportive of Proposition 37 in California, which is a November ballot initiative that if passed, would require the labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs. Monsanto has reportedly spent millions to oppose the measure.

Those participating in the protest remain deeply skeptical of research and the government oversight which has allowed GMOs to get to the market.

Andrea Kaiser, of University City, joined in the protest Monday after hearing about it on the radio. She said she had been wanting to do something like this and was ready to do it by herself.

"It's time to stop. We need to create something that's a little more health-friendly and not just something to take over the world."
