House of India to Reopen Wednesday

The restaurant sustained damage in a fire March 15.

House of India Restaurant, which sustained damage in a fire March 15, is set to reopen Wednesday, April 3. 

According to a press release from owner Satish Kumar, Wednesday marks a return to the restaurant's daily lunch buffet and dinner service.

“The small kitchen fire caused slight smoke damage very late on March 14," Kumar said in the release. "We closed for a thorough cleaning and to repair attic insulation, ceiling tiles and carpet. House of India has been in this location for 18 years and we’re proudly serving many generations of our loyal customers.”

The fire started around 12:15 a.m. March 15 at the restaurant at Delmar Blvd. and Berick Drive. The University City Fire Department got a call that smoke was coming from the roof. Crews found the fire in the kitchen. They were able to keep the fire to the kitchen and put it out in less than 45 minutes.

Kumar told Patch the fire started from a pan of chicken accidentally in the oven.

"It was an accident," he said. "We've been closed for 19 days and we are eagar to open back up tomorrow."
