Comment on the passing of Larry Lieberman

When my husband and I moved to University City in January of 1978, two of the first people we met were Larry and Joy Lieberman. They were activists for our community.

During the 1960's and 1970's University City experienced severe block busting, white flight and red lining by banks.  It was a city in turmoil.  Our Delmar Loop was definitely not what it is now and was known in the area as a "biker hangout." One of the first questions asked by friends when they heard you lived in UCity was “do you have bars on your windows?”

Joy and Larry Lieberman were two of a large group of activists who stepped up to the plate.  Joy joined the school board and Larry became a UCity council person.  They loved our community and gave back to it in a way that helped overcome the racial prejudice and divisiveness of the time.

So to the people who lived in UCity back then, we know we have suffered a loss with the passing of Larry Lieberman. To the people who are more recent residents of our city, Larry Lieberman played a significant part in what you have here today.

Thank you Larry (August 15, 1926 - September 7, 2011)
