U City Symphony to Perform Free Concert

Winners of Schatzkamer Awards also will perform.

The University City Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at in University City at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29. The public is invited.

The “Young Artist Concert” will feature the winners of the 2012 William Schatzkamer Award. In addition, musical selections will be Festive Overature by Shostakovitch, Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov and Cavatina by local composer Robert Howard.

“It will be a veritable musical feast,” said Dr. Leon Burke III, music director and conductor for the Symphony. “We will have something for everyone.”

“We are always pleased to have the University City Symphony play at our church,” added Monsignor Michael Witt, pastor at All Saints. “We invite everyone in the community to come hear a wonderful concert.”

The winners of the 2012 Schatzkamer Award are Kaitlyn Postula, a flutist from Mascoutah, IL and Alyssa Callaghan, a soprano from St. Louis. Both will perform at the concert.

The award is named for William Schatzkamer, the first music director and conductor of the University City Symphony who served in the position for more than 35 years. The competion is limited to young artists. 

The University City Symphony Orchestra is in its 51st year and has been performing at All Saints for about 20 years. All Saints Parish has been a part of the University City community for more than 100 years. It is located at Clemens and Westgate, a few blocks north of the Delmar Loop.

Everyone attending the concert is welcome to join Symphony members for refreshments after the concert.
