History Museum Director Named Leader of Theatre Alliance

Elizabeth Pickard, assistant director of interpretive programs for the Missouri History Museum, was recently elected Vice President of the International Museum Theatre Alliance (IMTAL). Her term will begin in May. 

Pickard is a University City resident.

She will serve as vice president for two years before beginning her two-year term as president of the IMTAL Americas.

"Most IMTAL members are likely aware of Elizabeth's many excellent contributions to the field of museum theatre through her museum theatre programs at the Missouri History Museum," said Jillan Finkle, president of IMTAL, in a press release. "She embodies both ambition and pragmatism. She is thoughtful, engaging and inclusive, and she can make even the most boring discussions fun. I believe Elizabeth represents exactly what IMTAL needs to continue to grow, thrive and innovate."

IMTAL is an affiliate of the American Association of Museums. It promotes and advocates for the use of museum theatre and supports its members in improving the quality of their programs. 

Museum theatre is the use of drama and theatrical techniques to enhance the educational experience within a museum. Performed in formal and informal theatre spaces and frequently interactive, these content-based educational performances are designed to promote and emotive and cognitive response. 

Pickard served as membership officer for IMTAL from 2008-10 and as chair of the 2010 Regional IMTAL-Americas conference held at the Missouri History Museum. 

She has worked at the History Museum since 2005 and headed the interpretive programs since 2009.
