The competition for young artists is named for William Schatzkamer, the first music director and conductor of the University City Symphony who served in the position for more than 35 years. He died last year at the age of 96.

Schatzkamer had a long and distinguished musical career as a concert pianist, teacher and conductor. He was on the faculty of Washington University for many years and also was the music director and a founder of the Gateway Festival Orchestra
