Author Creola Colon to Discuss 'Born With a Broken Heart'

The event will be held Aug. 15 at the University City Public Library.

Creola Colon will discuss her book  Born with a Broken Heart, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the University City Public Library auditorium. Her book is both an autobiography and a medical history of her family's perseverance against heterotaxy, a deadly genetic disease carried from mother to son.

Colon will share her story of spiritual growth from loneliness, doubt and superstition to a personal experience of the constant presence of God, while learning to overcome the challenges in the life of a black woman in a male-dominated culture, according to the library.

Colon is a native of Mississippi. She served in the United States Navy and as a Navy Corpsman, she spent seven years with the US Marines. Her career took her from the southeast coast to the west coast, to Okinawa, Japan, and to South Korea. She is a veteran of Persian Gulf War Operation Desert Storm. She served on the Submarine Tender ship, USS McKee AS41.
