Residents Tour U City's Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse; St. Louis Area's Newest Museum

Public got preview tour of the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse of Sunday.

The oldest known house in University City, built in 1873, is now the Saint Louis area's newest museum.

On Sunday, dozens of U City residents turned out for a preview tour of the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse, located at 6826 Chamberlain Court. A band played live music on the porch of the house, while guests mingled.

The Sutter- Meyer Society was founded in 2006. The organization has worked to transform the Sutter-Meyer house into a community museum and educational center.

For three years volunteers have been working to repair the house, according to the organization's newsletter. One Eagle Scout group built a new wood porch with an accessible ramp; another will soon start an herb garden.

An interesting note, the floor in the former kitchen of the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse was replaced using  rock maple flooring recovered from the Parkway Central High School gym. The Parkway School District had salvaged the gym flooring in hopes of finding someone who could recycle it. The flooring eventually made its way to the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse.

The farmhouse will open to the public one weekend day and by appointment. People can go to the website www.suttermeyer.org for information on visiting hours and events.
