Patch Picks: Five Places in University City for Brunch

We have your top picks for a leisurely brunch here in University City.

Nothing says the weekend like brunch. Whether you’re craving an egg sandwich at 9 a.m. or some Huevos Rancheros in the late afternoon, these five University City restaurants will work their culinary magic to put you in a weekend frame of mind.

  1. Jilly’s Cupcake Bar - Saturday’s from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Jilly’s works magic on more than cupcakes. For under $10 you can get decadent delights like the Brisket Hash and Eggs, a Salmon Benedict, or an entire breakfast in a bun with the Morning Cristo (ham, bacon and eggs stuffed inside two slices of French Toast and served as a sandwich).
  2. Marco’s - Saturday and Sunday mornings Marcos starts you off with that southern staple, chicken and waffles. You can also pick from 8 omelettes or six different meats served alongside scrambled eggs and hash browns. Since you can get bacon or sausage anywhere, be adventurous and try the catfish. Best of all, everything on the brunch menu costs $9 or less.
  3. Winslow’s - Winslow's serves breakfast every day from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., but on weekends they add an omelette, fritata and French Toast to the usual offerings of pancakes, oatmeal or quiche. Winslow’s is half restaurant and half quirky gift shop, so if you bring the kids, be prepared to buy them a toy - and maybe a couple playful kitchen gadgets for yourself.
  4. Flaco’s Cocina - You don’t have to wait until the weekend to try Huevos Rancheros or the Fried Egg and Chorizo sandwich at Flaco’s Cocina. The former brunch menu was so popular they incorporated the best of it into the regular menu. If you slept in too late for brunch, you can still get a spicy morning-style egg and sausage fix here any time of day.
  5. J&W Bakery - If you don’t normally think Chinese Bakery when contemplating brunch, you’ve never been to J&W. The egg custard tarts, curry beef bun, and home made swiss cake rolls are a perfect combination of take home savory and sweets for your own brunch. Yes, home made swiss cake rolls. Try the green tea. You’ll never crave Little Debbie again.
