Overnight Storm Downs Trees, Power Lines, Damage Cars in University City

University City Patch saw two cars that were damaged by the overnight storms.

Overnight storms packing heavy rain, wind, thunder and lighting made for a messy morning in University City.

The Loop area was hit pretty hard. Residents who went for their java fix Sunday morning were forgiven if they drove right past the Starbucks on the corner of Delmar and Leland. It was shrouded behind fallen trees and broken branches.

On Clemens, a street light toppled over on top of a parked car, shattering the front windshield. A police officer was stationed in the area as a power line was also down.

Flares lined the road at Cates and Westgate, where a possible live power line was lying across the road. Also, a tree branch had smashed down on a car shattering its front window.

University City Patch did not notice any substantial standing water. However, Patch reader Arno Perlow wrote in to say that his rain gauge at 6am Sunday morning recorded a rainfall of 4.85 inches that fell overnight.

"That's the greatest 24 hour amount that I recorded since I moved to U City in 2001," wrote Perlow.

Here is a link to the Regional Precipitation Table from the National Weather Service. U City tops the overnight rainfall list.
