More Emergency Lights Go Up Near the Loop

Better lighting should bring some relief to Washington University students who take the Greenway Walk to the Loop.

Improved lighting and emergency phones have been installed along the Greenway Walk near the Loop. That's between Melville and Westgate avenues.

Many Washington University students use the Greenway Walk to travel to and from the Danforth Campus every day.

The safety improvements include, four new blue emergency lights along Melville Avenue. Each blue light has an emergency phone. Atop each light is a closed-circuit television system.

In February, two Wash U students reported being mugged as they walked in the 500 block of Melville. A University City police release said the students were approached by 4 males. One of the males punched the victim without provocation and stole his personal belongings, which were later recovered.  No weapons were used in this incident.
