Habitat Raises the Roof in University City

Five roofs were placed on houses Monday.

Floating through the air with the greatest of ease, the roofs for new homes were lifted from their backyard resting place to their permanent home on top of the new Habitat for Humanity homes.

Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity St. Louis put the roofs on the five homes currently under construction in University City. The roofs for each home were built on the ground and lifted via crane onto the structures.

Habitat first appeared in U City over a year ago, working with city planning officials. In addition to providing access to quality housing for low-income families, the residences will be setting a sustainable example by following LEED construction guidelines.

The new homes are four bedroom, 1.5 bath, two story homes and are designed to blend in aesthetically with the surrounding neighborhoods. The homes should be completed in the fall.
