Fish on Bike Sculpture Taken Out of Lewis Park Pond for Repairs

Fish on a Bike sculpture was damaged during the winter and has been taken out of Lewis Park Pond for repairs.

The Fish on a Bike sculpture that usually resides in the middle of the pond in Lewis Park has been taken out for repairs, but will be back.

The statue was damaged over the winter, said Ewald Winker, Interim Director of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department at a recent Parks Commission meeting.

Winker said the Gateway Foundation, which donated the sculpture and maintains it, took it out and is repairing it and welding it back into shape. He said the Gateway Foundation is also taking care of the tab.

Winker isn't exactly sure what caused the damage. He speculates that when the pond froze over this winter some kids walked out to the statue and played on it, bending it.

"I've had at least 6 phone calls about Fish on a Bike," said Winker. "I didn't know it was that popular."

Parks Commission President John Sweeney suggested placing a sign at Lewis Park saying Fish on a Bike will be back. "I've had some people ask me about it," said Sweeney.

Winker said he doesn't have any idea when the sculpture will be put back in Lewis Park. He just knows that it will be.

Meanwhile, the golf theme sculpture in Lewis Park pond is only on temporary display. It's part of a sculpture series by Washington University undergrads. It will be there until September first.
