City Receives Grant to Fund Updates to Millar Park

The $300,000 grant will help make the park ADA accessible and fund construction of new restrooms and a picnic shelter.

The Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County has awarded University City $300,000 to update Millar Park, located at 7603 Carleton.

The money comes from a 0.1 cent sales tax for regional, county and municipal parks and trails that voters approved in 2000. Thirty-two grant applications were submitted in this current round of funding, and University City’s application was one of 15 approved. Including this round, about 235 municipal grants will have been funded, totaling more than $32 million.

Millar Park was acquired in 1928, and sees approximately 60,500 visitors each year.

“Millar Park, like all of our parks, is a very important resource to U City,” said Richard Wilson, University City Director of Public Works and Parks. “Our parks provide places for residents to play, exercise and gather. They provide an economic value to the community, and updating our parks continues to add to that value.”

Plans for Millar Park include replacing the parking lot and making it ADA accessible, constructing a new picnic shelter, adding new benches, trash receptacles, a barbeque grill, a drinking fountain, a new restroom, sod and shrubs, and if the budget supports it, replacing the trail.

“We expect work to begin in April or May of this year,” said Wilson. “By December 2013, the renovations to Millar Park should be completed and ready for all to enjoy.”

The updates are the result of neighborhood and community input, which was solicited in September 2012.
