It was a full house Monday afternoon at a grand opening party for Piccione Pastry, the new Italian pastry shop in the Delmar Loop. Piccione is located at 6197 Delmar Blvd., at the intersection of Delmar and Skinker. The menu features a variety of traditional Italian desserts including cannoli, bomboloni, tiramisu, pasticiotti and cassata cake. Biscotti and other cookies are also available. The eateries in the Delmar Loop and around University City are some of the best in the area. This week, several have gotten honors for their food. Cicero's Pizza Named One of the Midwest's Best Midwest Living Magazine recently named Cicero's one of the 27 Great Midwest Pizzerias. Good reviews for a University City favorite and lots of new restaurants coming to the Delmar Loop. BluePrint Coffee RFT's Gut Check blog reports that BluePrint Coffee is coming. The coffee shop will be in the same building as Mission Taco Joint and Chubbie's. No opening date has been announced. Piccione Pastry Update The owner of Butler's Pantry is opening a new pastry shop at the corner of Skinker and Delmar in the East Loop, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. A new burger restaurant called The Dam is opening in Tower Grove South this spring, according to Riverfront Times' Gut Check blog. The restaurant will be helmed by Michele Coen-Racanelli, who University City residents may know as the former co-owner of Big V's Burger Joint, according to the blog. The Delmar Loop space was known for the triple patty "The Animal," Gut Check reports. (The publication even named it "Best Restaurant to Die in the Past Year" in 2008.) Two new restaurants have opened in the Delmar Loop. Chubbies opened Feb. 7 at 6227 Delmar Boulevard. The specialties of the house are burgers, wings and frozen custard. The menu also includes cheesesteaks, soft drinks and beer. The Riverfront Times noted in its review that Chubbies is part of a what has become a very busy block: It is located immediately next-door to the former Delmar Lounge, which will soon become Mission Taco Joint. Mission Taco Joint is planning to open in the Delmar Loop in late February. Sauce Magazine has a preview of the draft menu. Quoting from Sauce: The tightly focused menu begins with a handful of shared appetizers. Highlights include crab taquitos as well as roasted mushrooms with huitlachoche, goat cheese and arugula presented in a fried corn masa base called a huarache. A la carte tacos include popular choices such as baja fish and carne asada, but Mission gets creative with quite a few others, such as the chile-roasted duck with crisp pork belly and avocado serrano sauce. A film crew was in University City earlier this week to shoot a commercial for McDonalds'. The crew shot along the Chuck Berry Statue in the Delmar Loop. The Riverfront Times Gut Check blog reports that the spot is part of a new series called "Good Morning, STL." Tina Cross, a freelancer serving as the line producer for the commercial, told the RFT she thinks this is one of many advertising campaigns targeting a specific region or city that McDonald's is beginning to produce all over the U.S. The commercial also shot downtown and at Lambert St. Louis International Airport. The Daily Meal has named its top 50 cupcakes in the United States and Jilly's Cupcake Bar's French Silk cupcake made the cut. The site evaluated the must-have cupcake at the bakeries. The bakeries were judged on menu, cupcake design and frosting to cake ratio. Each category was scored on a 1-10 basis. Jilly's received a 9 for both menu and design, but only a 5 rating in the frosting-to-cake category. Coming Soon The Good Pie, currently located near St. Louis University, is coming to the Delmar Loop. The pizza shop will take over a 2,200 square foot section of Ginger Bistro. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the move will likely come in May. Ginger Bistro is not closing; the owner is splitting his floor space to accommodate both restaurants. The Good Pie chef and co-owner Mike Randolph also owns Half & Half and the Little Country Gentleman in Clayton. Great Reviews The Riverfront Times named the "Spicy Wonton Soup at Famous Szechuan Pavilion on Olive in its top 10 dishes of 2012.
A brand new year means brand new restaurants coming to University City and the Delmar Loop. Pita Pit is coming to 6120 Delmar, near Tavolo V in the East Loop. Lots of food news to report in the University City area. Fortel's Coming to U City Fortel's Pizza Den is opening in University City at 7359 Forsyth. The sixth St. Louis area location will be near Washington University. According to the St. Louis Business Journal, the new location will open in mid-December. The 2,600-square-foot restaurant will seat 75 indoors with another 16 seats outdoors. Fortel's has locations in Affton, Ballwin Creve Coeur, Kirkwood and Fairview Heights. Celebrity sightings, new menus and some closings to report. Jimmy Kimmel was in the St. Louis area over Thanksgiving weekend. While in town, he stopped by University City's own Winslow's Home.
